Title Programs

_ What is Title I?

The purpose of Perry County’s federally funded Title I, Part A Program is to improve teaching and learning for students in high-poverty schools so that these students meet the state’s challenging content and performance standards. Title I is one program under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Title I schools can operate either as targeted assistance or school wide. In Perry County, all Title I schools operate a school wide program. School wide programs use their funds to improve the entire program of the school so that all students are impacted. The benefits that this program provides are: intervention services, tutors, extra classroom support for struggling students, and professional development provided to teachers and other staff. Also, Title I money may be combined with other funding sources to pay for new programs.

All students are held to the same high standards. In a school wide program, students may stay in their class and still receive Title I services. Since the whole school gets the services, students are less likely to feel singled out.

A successful school wide Title I program is the result of schools and parents working together. Parents can help plan the school wide program at the annual parent meeting. They can review the program and suggest changes. Also, schools can offer adult workshops from time to time to help parents with reading, writing, math and other skills, along with parenting skills.

For more information on Perry County School System’s Title I program, contact the principal of your school or the Perry County Board of Education Office and ask for Nelda Hinson.  931-589-2102  Email:  nhinson@perrycountyschools.us
